Escorted by the Saints who passed before him, James (Jim) Stewart left his earthly life and began his Heavenly residency with his Lord and Savior early Sunday morning, June 22, 2025 at Arbors in Pomeroy after a short but courageous battle with brain cancer. Jim was born on November 21, 1950, to the late Clarence and Iva O. Stewart and retured from the Meigs Coal Mines. Jim was known as the "fixer of broken things." It was said that if Jim couldn't fix it, it was beyond repair. Jim was also known for playing good pranks on friends and family and continued to be quite the jokester right up to the very end. In addition, Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman, great at woodworking and enjoyed any activity that allowed him to spend time outdoors. Jim attended Middleport High School before enlisting in the United States Navy where he proudly served until he was called home from duty to help care for his ailing mother. In March, 2023, he was named Legionnaire of the Year by American Legion Post 39 which was an honor he was proud to be able to share with his entire family. On September 1, 1972, Jim married the love of his life, his wife Kathy, and they shared 52 wonderful years together. In addition to Kathy, he is survived by his children, James Stewart II (Chastity) of Langsville; Beverly Stewart (Michael Blaettnar) of Pomeroy; his sister, Marcia (Herb) Elliott of Langsville; sisters-in-law Sue Pearson of Pt. Pleasant, and Alice Mae Elliott of Athens, brothers-in-law Dick Elliott of Pt. Pleasant, and Frank (Cathy) Elliott of Racine and his beloved grandchildren, who each held a very special place in his heart, Ethan and Sophie Stewart of Langsville and Brycen, Quentin, and Carter Smith of Pomeroy, as well as a bonus granddaughter, Andrea Mahr of Rutland. Jim is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and even a few great, great-nieces and great, great-nephews. Jim was also blessed with a wonderful church family that he deeply loved. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Myrville and Bill Brown; his brother, Clarence "Sonny" Stewart; his beloved mother-in-law, Thelma Elliott Weater; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Services to celebrate Jim's life and transition to Heaven will be held on Thursday, June 26 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bradford Church of Christ with Russ Moore officiating. The American Legion Post 39 will also be conducting military services. Interment will follow at the Bradford Cemetery. Friends are encouraged to visit the family on Wednesday evening, June 25, from 6-8 at the Bradford Church of Christ Activity Building. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to American Legion Post 39 in Jim's name. Birchfield Funeral Home in Rutland is serving Jim's family during this time.
